Important information on Tramadol

Tramadol hydrochloride tablets, which is also the generic form of Ultram, is a prescription medication for the management of moderate to severe pain. It relieves different types of pain, and is also used as an analgesic by working on certain areas of the brain and nervous system to decrease pain. This medication received FDA approval in March 1995, and has been prescribed to more than 21 million patients in the US alone.

Some Precautions

It is important to consult with a physician or any other health specialists before taking this medication since this may interact with other medicines or herbal products and produce unwanted effects. In addition, generic Ultram can be addictive and should be used with caution. Patients are encouraged to consult their physician or health specialist before stopping dosage or if used over an extended period.

Pregnant and breastfeeding women are encouraged to seek their physician's approval before taking this medicine. Certain components of this drug may have an effect to the unborn baby or pass through breast milk. This medication is not approved for children under 12 years of age or for adults over 65 years old.

Activities that may demand alertness should be avoided while under Tramadol medication, because this drug may cause dizziness and sleepiness. Alcohol, as well as other opioids, narcotics, and sedatives should also be avoided because it may increase certain side effects and minimize the effectiveness of this medication. Do not take Tramadol if you are allergic to any of its ingredients, or if you have sever diarrhea due to an antibiotic. Also, do not take this medication if you are taking nefazodone, carbamazepine, or sodium oxybate (GHB).

Like other muscle relaxants and other pain-killing medications, Tramadol may bring certain side effects. It may include any of the following:

• constipation
• diarrhea
• dizziness
• drowsiness
• increased sweating
• loss of appetite
• nausea

Consult your doctor or physician if symptoms not mentioned above develops.

If a dose is missed, take this medication as soon as possible. If it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and follow the regular schedule. Do not take two doses at once to catchup.

Contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately if overdose takes place.
